a letter to ronnie

Lately I've been struggling with being a lesbian who likes video games. What I mean by that is that women tend to treat me like a man or as though I am trying to appease men. However, I am simply an autistic woman who's special interest is video games. I do my best to be social but I have no clue if I am successful in my endeavors. Regardless, I'm still trying.

dear ronnie,

due to my own ignorance, I would never have imagined that our community would treat you in such way for merely enjoying video games. I am sorry this is the case, it sounds upsetting and I believe it may be some covert ableism. while I know little about video games (my wife, however, is addicted to them), I understand what it feels like to be autistic and to be mocked for your special interest. people will do the cruelest things in the name of seeming cool. at the end of the day, they are just miserable and envious of those who experience joy.

I am happy and proud of you for continuing to try despite how challenging this can be sometimes. I am also wondering if you have given bumble bff a try. I don't know how different it would be for you since I reside in portland, but there I encountered plenty of great queer and autistic people, many of them being gamers themselves.

if you give it a try, I would love to hear more about it. keep trying, okay?
